Braves Go Down Fighting, Fall to Comox in OT

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart  - The Saanich Braves battled hard, but a goal from Comox's Duncan Pernal at 2:44 of overtime gave the Glacier Kings a 3-2 win Monday evening in VIJHL playoff action at Pearkes Arena in Saanich. The win gave the Glacier Kings a sweep of the opening round VIJHL playoff series four games to none and broke the hearts of the Braves, who had played perhaps their best game in the past two months.

Glacier Kings Overpower Braves 7-2

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart -  The Comox Valley Glacier KIngs used four powerplay goals to cruise to a 7-2 win over the Saanich Braves in Game 2 of their VIJHL playoff series Thursday night at Pearkes Arena in Saanich. The win gives Comox a 2-0 lead in the series with Game 3 scheduled to be back in Comox on Saturday evening. The Glacier Kings scored early in this one, as just 3:17 in, Dallas Maxwell would walk out from the corner and fire Comox's first shot high glove side on Saanich goaltender Jason Stewart for the 1-0 lead.

Braves Drop Game 1 to Comox 4-1

Tue Feb 18 2014

Story by Christian J. Stewart - The Comox Valley Glacier Kings used three second period goals to skate to a 4-1 win over the Saanich Braves in Game 1 of their VIJHL playoff series in Comox on Tuesday evening. The score disguises the fact that the Braves, buoyed by the return of Fraser Sutherland, Wade Bartlett, James Sneddon and Garrett Stankoven to the line-up, caused the Glacier Kings a great deal of concern over the first half of the game, holding them to just 5 shots in period one and 10 shots on goal through the mid-point of the second period and...

Braves Open Playoffs Against Comox Valley on Tuesday

Story by Christian J. Stewart - The Saanich Braves will open their 2014 VIJHL playoff season against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Tuesday, thanks to the Kings 4-3 OT win Saturday night over Nanaimo that gave Comox a one-point advantage over Campbell River for first in the North. The hard-charging Storm also won their game Saturday against Oceanside 4-2, but they needed a win and a Comox loss to re-claim first place. They will now face the Nanaimo Buccaneers in the first round. In the South, the Victoria Cougars will play the Kerry Park Islanders - 5-2 winners over the Braves...

One-Goal-itis Plagues Braves Again

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart - For the fourth time in their last five games, the Saanich Braves came out on the short end of a one-goal hockey game, this time dropping a 3-2 decision to the Oceanside Generals in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey action Friday night at Pearkes Arena in Saanich. The loss spoiled a touching Valentine's night ceremony that was held prior to the game for the Junior Brave's Moms and billet Mom's, as well as a special pre-game ceremony that honoured former Brave and current San Jose Shark, Matt Irwin. The Braves presented Irwin with a framed...

Braves Can't Buy A Break - Fall to Kerry Park in Final Seconds

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart - A shorthanded goal by Kerry Park's Eric Mansueti with 17 seconds remaining to play, gave the Islanders a 3-2 win over the Saanich Braves in VIJHL action Friday night at Pearkes Arena in Saanich. Kerry Park's winning goal was a microcosm of the bad luck that has been plaguing the Braves all season. After a stint in the Kerry Park end, where the Braves powerplay unit almost notched the go-ahead goal, the Islanders cleared the puck down the ice, where Saanich goaltender Jason Stewart came out to play it. At the same time, defenseman...

Buccaneers Too Much For Braves to Handle

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart  - The Nanaimo Buccaneers used a five-goal, second period explosion to cruise to an 8-2 win over the Saanich Braves in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action Friday night at Pearkes Arena in Saanich. The win was the second in a row for the Buc's over the Braves, coming on the heels of a 4-3 win in Nanaimo on Thursday night. The Braves actually got the jump in this game, outplaying the Buccaneers over the first 5 minutes plus of the game and being rewarded when Jordan Groenhyde blasted a powerplay slap shot past Buc's...

Close But No Cigar - Braves Drop 4-3 Decision to Buc's

Story and Photos by Christian J. Stewart - David Osborne's goal at the 11:22 mark of the third period was the game winner as the Nanaimo Buccaneers skated to a 4-3 won over the Saanich Braves in VIJHL action Thursday night in Nanaimo.   The win was the Buccaneers second in the last three games but just their third in a tough January. It did not come easy however, as the Buccaneers at one point held a 3-0 lead only to see the scrappy Braves tie it up early in the third, before Osborne's heroics saved the day.
