After a lackluster 3-0 home loss Friday to the Westshore Wolves that saw Saanich Braves Head Coach Brad Cook take his team back onto the ice for a practice following the game, the Junior Braves responded with a 5-2 win over the Oceanside Generals on Saturday in Parksville. Josh Gray and Sam Johnston led the way with a pair of goals each, while Bowman Rutledge stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win.
The Braves would open the scoring early as Ty Jones beat Oceanside goalie Kiefer Giroux just 1:19 into the game.
Oceanside would respond with a marker by Michael Fetz at 5:22 and Johnston would score his first at the 8:11 mark to take the Braves into the break with a 2-1 lead.
The teams would exchange goals in the second period - Josh Gray for Saanich and Chandler Bruyckere for Oceanside - but in the third, the Braves would take over, peppering 18 shots on Giroux and getting goals from Johnston and Gray to put the game away.
Notes: The Braves outshot the Generals 44-23. Nick Kapusty and Shawn McBride chipped in a pair of assists each. The Braves were still without the services of defencemen Garrett Kemmler and Liam Sproule and forward Sam McMullen who are out with injuries. No call ups made the trip to Oceanside and the Braves went with just 14 skaters in the line-up.
